FAQs for a Half Pork:
What is hanging weight?
After an animal is harvested, their skin, intestines, organs, hoofs, blood and head are removed. Then it is weighed again. This weight is the hanging weight. For a half pork it is a half of that weight.
What is the actual weight I'll take home from the processor?
On average you can plan on taking home about 74% of the hanging weight. So, if the average is 200 lbs for the hanging weight of a whole pork, that would be 100 lbs for a half. You can expect to take home about 100 * .74 = 74 lbs of meat. You can look online for how much freezer space you'll need for a whole or half pork. We also have a video for what to expect from our half or whole pork orders: Will A Whole Pork Fit in my Freezer?
How can I keep the organs, fat, offal, etc.?
Many use the organs or other parts of the animal for their meals, broth and stock. Fat is often rendered for lard or tallow. Be very clear with the processor about the items you'd like to keep. They will often get rid of whatever they can and you'll need to be proactive in asking them if they can keep those items back for you.
How do I know when to give instructions to the processor about how I want my animal processed?
We will give the processor your contact information and they will reach out to you or we will give you the processor's information for you to reach out to them, depending upon the processor's preference.
What price can I expect to pay to the processor?
The harvest fee for a half pork is about $50 and the base rate for cut/wrap fee is $1.00 per pound hanging weight. If you don't add any specialty requests, for a hanging weight of 100 pounds you can expect to pay $50 for the harvest fee plus $100 (100 lbs * $1.00) for the cut/wrap for a total of $150 ($50 + $100).
How do I know when to pick up my meat?
We or the processor will reach out to you with those details.
I'm just nervous because I don't know what questions to ask?
Please reach out to us anytime with any questions. We are happy to walk you through the process. The processors we use are very used to first time buyers and they will patiently walk you through the process too.
Qualities of our Pork:
Our pigs are never administered hormones, steroids, antibiotics nor vaccines. We use natural remedies (herbs, homeopathy, apple cider vinegar etc.) for emergencies but have found by managing our livestock properly we rarely need to administer these remedies. You could say our pork is beyond organic.
